Scientific and medical research has long shown that free radicals are associated with a wide range of diseases. It is also widely accepted that antioxidants help neutralise free radicals and may therefore assist in reducing the risk of cellular damage linked to disease.
Free radicals are very reactive molecules associated with: pollution, alcohol, processed foods, stress, exercise and even normal metabolic processes like breathing. Antioxidants are a type of scavenger — substances that scavenge and neutralise these free radicals, reducing the damage they do to cells. So good are antioxidants at neutralising free radicals that the following list explains just some of the positive benefits: antioxidants reduce free radicals formed in the body. Antioxidants also: help reduce and decrease free radical damage to body cells, maintain and support immune system health and function, maintain and support skin health. As well, antioxidants maintain and support blood vessel health, blood circulation and blood flow to the peripheral areas of the body (eg legs, hands and feet), They also maintain and support nervous system health.
A continuing area of debate within the medical community, however, is how best to maintain adequate antioxidant levels in the human body. While most agree that a well-balanced diet should ideally provide sufficient daily antioxidant intake, there is no clear consensus on what an “optimal” diet looks like in practice.
In reality, achieving an ideal level of antioxidants in your body through diet alone is difficult in modern Western societies. Many factors limit the nutritional quality of everyday food, including soil mineral and nutrient depletion, modern farming and harvesting methods, food processing, transportation, and storage. In addition, modern foods may contain substances (eg herbicides and pesticides) that contribute to oxidative stress rather than reduce it.
MiVeda recognises these challenges and takes the view that, for many people, supplementation is a practical way to help maintain reasonable antioxidant levels. In most cases, it is unlikely that the average Western diet alone can consistently supply optimal levels of antioxidants.
That said, MiVeda does not suggest that antioxidant supplements are a medical treatment or a guaranteed therapeutic necessity. Rather, we believe they are a sensible option for supporting healthier systemic antioxidant levels when used alongside the best practical nutritional diet an individual can maintain. In particular, the “ACE” antioxidants—vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene (which the body converts to vitamin A)—are widely regarded as essential. Research has also highlighted the strong antioxidant properties of bioflavonoids and oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), which are found in high concentrations in ingredients such as grape seed extract, pine bark extract, turmeric (curcumin), and Ginkgo Biloba.
For this reason, we have developed the MiVeda Revivel Antioxidant product, a potent supplement combining all these key antioxidant ingredients. Revivel Antioxidant is designed to complement a balanced diet and help support more optimal daily antioxidant levels.
As with many nutrients and natural compounds, some ingredients—such as Ginkgo Biloba and Curcumin—should be taken as directed because moderation matters. As with salt, sugar, fat, or even water, excessive intake can lead to unwanted effects, whereas appropriate amounts are well tolerated and required.
